On June 25 at 1 p.m. at Millennium Park, a small group of participants from the Peterborough Dialogues is hosting a community ceremony to honour and celebrate “a new beginning,” for us as individuals and for us as a community.
If you’ve felt the emptiness grow inside you, willed yourself on, unable to leave what you’ve outgrown, played with the seduction of safety,* — and if you long for a “new beginning,” or if perhaps you’ve already stepped onto “new ground,” or are about to — then this invitation is for you.
Ceremony offers a way to make visible and make space for what matters. A new kind of ceremony is seeing a resurgence worldwide — ceremony that is light, accessible, even fun while at the same time respectful.
That’s the intended flavour of this upcoming, brief gathering. Expect some movement, poetry, symbolic items such as flower petals. Moments that have a sacred feeling, and moments of laughter. There will be invitations for self-expression and time for a community response. Thought will have been put into how the ceremony unfolds, but there will also be room for spontaneity.
“This sense of a new story emerging isn’t just happening in Peterborough. From around the world we’re hearing whispers of it, calls for similar shifts.”
So many of us as individuals are at a crossroads, at points of new beginning. But there’s also a sense that our community, Peterborough, is at a turning point: that collectively we have an opportunity to step into, create and celebrate a new story for us, the “larger us.” And of course, this sense of a new story emerging isn’t just happening in Peterborough. From around the world we’re hearing whispers of it, echoes of similar themes, calls for similar shifts.
So why not have a community ceremony, a collective experience to honour all of this, to celebrate it, connect with one another around it? We may find ourselves able to step more fully into our lives, our new beginnings, as individuals and as a community — to “awaken our spirits to adventure, holding nothing back.”*
